A temporary residence card Vietnam immigration authorities issue removes the need for repeated visa renewals and is what makes a long-term posting practical. It is granted by visa symbol, and the symbol on entry determines what card, if any, the holder can obtain.
Choosing the wrong entry visa is the single most common reason an executive has to leave and re-enter Vietnam before a card can be issued. This guide sets out the six rules that avoid that.

Temporary Residence Card Vietnam: Eligible Categories
Cards are issued to holders of investor visas, to holders of the working visa symbol who hold a work permit or exemption confirmation, to intra-company transferees, to lawyers licensed to practise in Vietnam, and to certain family members and dependants.
Tourist and short business visa symbols are not convertible. An executive who enters on a business visa and then obtains a work permit will normally need to exit and re-enter on the correct symbol before the card can be applied for, which costs a week and a flight.
Temporary Residence Card Vietnam: Investor Categories and Validity
Investor visa symbols are tiered by the value of the capital contributed to a Vietnamese company, and the maximum card validity follows the tier. The highest tier supports a card of up to ten years; middle tiers support five and three years; the lowest tier supports a shorter term.
The tier is evidenced by the capital recorded in the enterprise registration certificate and by evidence that the contribution has actually been made through the direct investment capital account. Committed but unpaid capital does not support the higher tier, as explained in our note on the DICA account.
Temporary Residence Card Vietnam: Working Category Validity
For an employee holding a work permit, the temporary residence card Vietnam authorities issue cannot exceed the validity of the work permit. Since a permit runs for up to two years, the card follows the same horizon and is renewed with the permit.
Groups therefore sequence renewals: work permit extension first, residence card renewal second, with the application filed before the current card expires rather than after. A lapsed card converts the holder into an overstayer even where the permit remains valid.

Temporary Residence Card Vietnam: Sponsoring Entity and Documents
The application is sponsored by the Vietnamese employer or the company in which the investor holds capital. The dossier includes the application form, the sponsoring entity’s corporate documents and seal registration, the passport with the correct visa symbol, the work permit or exemption confirmation where applicable, and temporary residence registration at the local police for the residential address.
Residence registration is routinely overlooked by executives living in serviced apartments who assume the landlord has filed it. Immigration will check, and an unregistered address stops the application.
Temporary Residence Card Vietnam: Dependants
Spouses and children under eighteen may obtain dependant cards, with validity matched to the principal holder’s card and not exceeding it. Marriage and birth certificates require consular legalisation and certified Vietnamese translation.
Dependant holders may not work in Vietnam on that status. A spouse who takes employment needs their own work permit and a card in their own right, which is a frequent compliance gap in expatriate households.
Temporary Residence Card Vietnam: Renewal and Change of Employer
A card is tied to the sponsoring entity. Changing employer requires a new work permit and a new card sponsored by the incoming employer, and the outgoing employer should notify immigration on termination.
Where a group restructures and the employing entity changes, even without any change in role, the card must be reissued. Planning the immigration step into the restructuring timetable prevents executives being left without status during the transition. Our guides to the work permit process and exemptions cover the labour side.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a card take to issue?
Around five to ten working days from a complete dossier, once the work permit or investor evidence is in place.
Can a card be obtained without a work permit?
Yes, for investors and for exempt categories holding a confirmation, and for certain dependants.
Does the card allow multiple entries?
Yes. A valid card functions as a multiple entry authorisation for its term.
What happens if the company is dissolved?
The sponsorship ends and the card must be surrendered. Plan the immigration exit alongside the corporate one.
